Con-way Truckload became a SmartWay Transport Partner to become part of a long-term solution toward reducing emissions and fuel consumption. We believe this will be possible through the use of wide based tires, enhanced idling policies, exploration of idling solutions and a continual upgrade of Con-way Truckload's tractor fleet to the most recent available engines.
Con-way Truckload intends to research and test viable systems that will reduce or eliminate unnecessary idling while allowing our drivers to obtain their required rest in a comfortable environment. Today's drivers live in their trucks, and they will want to use technologies that will allow them to not only rest comfortably in the cab, but also reduce emissions.
Con-way Truckload's goal is to find ways to reduce emissions, to reduce fuel consumption, and to operate more efficiently.
Summary of Con-way Truckload's successes: • The first major truckload carrier to convert its entire fleet of tractors to wide-base tires, which has improved fuel mileage by a solid 2/10ths of a mile per gallon and an additional 2/10ths when coupled with a similarly equipped trailer.
• Converting more than 1,000 trailers per year to the wide base tire.
• Participating in field-testing of 2007 EPA compliant engines.
• Specifying their aeroprofile tractors with integrated cab and roof fairings.
• Equipping trucks with an auxiliary system to provide bunk heat to eliminate idling in cold conditions. • Designating specific areas as no-idling zones at its Corporate Headquarters terminal.
• Reducing emissions output by 366 metric tons of Carbon Dioxide (CO2), 118 metric tons of Nitrogen Oxide (NOX) and 3 metric tons of particulate matter.
• Increased the team drivers count from approximately 160 teams to 260 teams, reducing idling time • Is converting their entire fleet from pre-2002 emissions compliant engines to post-2002 engines
• Utilizes synthetic lubricants in the drive train component, reducing friction and improving fuel mileage
• Continues to convert their trailer fleet to wide base tires, with over 2,500 trailers to be converted by the end of 2007
